Red, White & 49: A Weekend to Celebrate, Connect & Share What We Love

July 2 is my actual birthday, and this year I turn 49.
For as long as I can remember, my birthday has been tied to the Fourth of July weekend. My dad’s birthday is July 6, so our family has always shared this time of year as a celebration. It has never just been about fireworks or the holiday. For me, this weekend has always felt like family, connection, gratitude, and coming together.
That is why this year, I wanted to celebrate in a way that feels meaningful to me.
Tennis is part of my family story, too.
My mom started playing tennis as an adult. She worked at it. She got good. Then she got really great. And eventually, she started teaching.
That has always meant something to me because that is what we do. When we find something that helps us grow, we share it. We share our success. We share our passion. We share what gave us confidence, connection, purpose, and joy.
Years later, I followed that same path in my own way. I picked up tennis at 39, at a stage of life when a lot of people stop trying new things. I took on a whole new sport, and I had no idea how much it would change my life.
Tennis challenged me. It humbled me. It gave me a new way to compete, connect, learn, and grow. It brought new people into my life and opened doors I did not expect.
Now, a decade later, I get to help weave that same spirit into other people’s lives through TGC Athletics.
TGC Athletics is more than one program or one facility. It is racquets, pool, fitness, movement, wellness, families, adults, kids, athletes, beginners, competitors, and community. It is a place where people can try something new, get stronger, find connection, and be part of something.
That is what I want to continue to build.
I want people to connect more. I want families to play together. I want adults to feel brave enough to try something new. I want kids to feel welcome. I want people to move, laugh, compete, grow, and share the things they love with others.
What better weekend to celebrate that than the Fourth of July?
So this year, for my 49th birthday, I wanted to give something back.
