The TGC Wellness Collective A weekly note on movement, recovery, and community at TGC Athletics

Why Recovery Deserves More Attention

At TGC, we spend a lot of time helping people move better, get stronger, and stay active. But training is only one part of progress. Recovery is what allows the body to adapt, rebuild, and continue performing consistently over time.

Recovery isn’t passive. It’s an active process that supports tissue health, nervous system regulation, and long-term resilience. Without it, even the best training plans eventually stall. With it, people tend to move better, feel better, and stay engaged longer.

As our community continues to grow across fitness, racquet sports, and general wellness, we’ve been intentional about expanding both the conversation and the access around recovery. Not because it’s trendy—but because it’s foundational to sustainable movement and overall well-being.

Understanding Contrast Therapy

Contrast therapy involves alternating periods of heat and cold exposure. Heat—typically through a sauna—supports circulation and tissue relaxation. Cold exposure encourages vasoconstriction, nervous system engagement, and a heightened sense of alertness. Together, the contrast creates a pumping effect through the circulatory system that many people find supportive for recovery and regulation.

Beyond physical benefits, contrast therapy can help influence the nervous system—assisting the body in shifting out of constant “go mode” and into a more balanced state. For many, this means improved recovery between sessions, better stress management, and a greater sense of readiness heading into the week.

“Recovery isn’t about doing less—it’s about supporting the systems that allow you to keep doing what you love.”

Fire & Ice at TGC brings full spectrum infrared sauna sessions and cold plunge therapy together in a calm, structured environment designed to complement strength training, conditioning, racquet sports, and everyday fitness. Members use Fire & Ice in different ways depending on their goals, training volume, and lifestyle. There is no single “right” approach—only intentional use that supports how your body feels and functions.

How Members Commonly Incorporate Fire & Ice

  • After workouts or play to help manage soreness and fatigue

  • Between training days to support circulation and tissue health

  • During high-volume weeks as a way to reset and regulate stress

  • As part of a regular wellness routine focused on balance and longevity

At TGC, we encourage members to think about recovery the same way they think about training—planned, consistent, and adaptable.

Access, Support & Getting Started

Fire & Ice Contrast Therapy is available to TGC members inside the TGC Tennis Center as part of our ongoing wellness offerings. Sessions can be reserved through Court Reserve, and members are welcome to book independently when it fits their schedule.

If you’d prefer assistance, have questions, or would like help getting started, you’re always welcome to call either the Fitness Center or the Tennis Center front desk. Our team can help with booking through Court Reserve and answer general questions.

For members who would like a more guided introduction—or help designing a recovery approach that complements their training—we encourage you to speak with one of our trainers or with Director Cori Burns about customized recovery planning and coordination support. Our goal is to make recovery accessible, supportive, and personal—not intimidating.

What to Expect During Your Session

To help make the experience comfortable from the start, TGC provides towels and robes, along with access to locker rooms before and after your session. Members typically wear swimwear or athletic wear for both the infrared sauna and cold plunge—whatever feels most comfortable and functional. There’s no expectation to follow a strict protocol. Some members prefer shorter rounds, others longer, and our team is happy to offer general guidance as you ease into the experience. The goal is simple: create an environment where recovery feels calm, supported, and easy to return to.
