The TGC Wellness Collective A weekly note on movement, recovery, and community at TGC Athletics

At Tascosa Golf Club, staying active doesn’t have an expiration date. Many of our members continue enjoying golf, tennis, pickleball, walking the trails, and fitness classes well into their later decades—and that’s exactly the goal. As a lifestyle coach and personal trainer, Colette Vogt focuses on helping senior members maintain the strength, balance, flexibility, and stability needed to live fully and independently.

The truth is simple: the body adapts at every age. With the right approach, you can improve mobility, protect your joints, and keep doing the activities you love.

Strength: The Key to Independence

Strength isn’t just about lifting weights—it’s about maintaining the ability to perform everyday movements with ease. Simple activities like getting up from a chair, climbing stairs, or carrying groceries all rely on muscle strength.

For active seniors, strength training helps:

  • Protect joints and reduce injury risk

  • Maintain bone density

  • Improve posture and stability

  • Support activities like golf swings and tennis strokes

Even light resistance exercises performed consistently can make a significant difference in how the body feels and functions.

Balance: Preventing Falls and Building Confidence

Balance tends to decline with age if it isn’t practiced regularly. The good news is that balance can be improved through targeted exercises that strengthen stabilizing muscles and train the nervous system.

Balance training helps members:

  • Move confidently on uneven surfaces

  • Maintain control during quick movements

  • Reduce the risk of falls

Whether you’re walking the course, playing pickleball, or simply navigating daily life, balance is one of the most valuable skills to maintain.

Flexibility and Mobility: Moving Freely

Stiff joints and tight muscles can make activities feel harder than they need to be. Flexibility and mobility work keep the body moving comfortably and efficiently.

Regular stretching and mobility exercises support:

  • A smoother golf swing

  • Greater reach and rotation in tennis and pickleball

  • Reduced muscle tension and soreness

  • Easier movement throughout the day

A few minutes of mobility work several days a week can dramatically improve how the body feels.

Stability: Protecting the Back and Joints

Core stability is essential for protecting the spine and maintaining good posture. It also plays a major role in controlling movement during sports and everyday activities.

Strong stabilizing muscles help:

  • Support the lower back

  • Improve balance and coordination

  • Enhance rotational movements in golf and racquet sports

Stability training doesn’t require complicated exercises—just consistent, purposeful movement.

Longevity Through Lifestyle

True longevity comes from a combination of habits: regular exercise, proper nutrition, quality sleep, and staying socially engaged. An active lifestyle helps preserve both physical and mental well-being.

At Tascosa, members have a unique advantage. Access to fitness facilities, expert instruction, walking trails, and a supportive community makes it easier to stay consistent and motivated.

The Goal: Stay Active, Stay Independent

Fitness later in life isn’t about pushing limits—it’s about protecting the freedom to keep doing what you love. When strength, balance, flexibility, and stability are maintained, everyday activities feel easier and recreational pursuits remain enjoyable.
